STEM Fledglings

Discovery Skills Awards II
 6 sessions - Mondays 8th January to 12th February 2018 inclusive
 9.30 to 11.30am 
 
 Learn scientific skills and use a wide range of scientific/ engineering equipment to gain bronze, silver and gold “Discovery Skills Awards”. Build on attainment in previous sessions or start working towards the next award. 
 
- Explore a range of fun/ practical activities and develop fundamentals of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. 
- Learn to use a range of scientific and engineering equipment.
- Each new skill demonstrated will earn a sticker towards our new “Discovery Skills Awards”; Bronze, Silver, then Gold.
- Completion of each level of award will be recognised with super scientific prizes!
 
By special permission, STEM Fledglings will have the unique opportunity on 15th January to visit the Alfred Denny Museum at the University of Sheffield. Here, we will see fossils, materials of extinct animals, complete skeletons and original letters from Charles Darwin, whilst engaging in a range of activities led by experienced teachers, academics and researchers.

STEM Apprentices

"Life on Earth"
6 sessions - Tuesdays 9th January to 13th February inclusive 
9.30 to 11.30am 
 
Explore the amazing diversity of life on our planet and investigate the challenges of the environments in which they survive and thrive.
 
- Meet a range of weird and wonderful visiting animals from our friends at "Reptile Rendezvous" and learn about how scientists categorise them (9th January).
- Investigate the Biology, Chemistry and Physics of coastal ecosystems and other challenging environments.
- By special permission, Professionals will have the unique opportunity on 16th January to visit the Alfred Denny Museum at the University of Sheffield. Here, we will see fossils, materials of extinct animals, complete skeletons and original letters from Charles Darwin, whilst engaging in a range of activities led by experienced teachers, academics and researchers.
- Build and keep carnivorous plant terraria.

STEM Professionals 

"Life on Earth"
6 sessions - Thursdays from 11th January to 15th February 2018 inclusive
12 noon to 2pm 
 
Explore the amazing diversity of life on our planet and investigate the challenges of the environments in which they survive and thrive.
 
- By special permission, Professionals will have the unique opportunity on 18th January to visit the Alfred Denny Museum at the University of Sheffield. Here, we will see fossils, materials of extinct animals, complete skeletons and original letters from Charles Darwin, whilst engaging in a range of activities led by experienced teachers, academics and researchers.
- Explore the electrical elements of the nervous system and how they are adapted in different life forms - with a particular focus on learning about voltage and current.
- Undertake a short project to design and build terraria for carnivorous plants and other organisms - with a particular focus on the Science of ecosystems and the technical skills to build with a range of materials, including wood.

GCSE Biology Group

Genetics

 6 sessions - Wednesdays 10th January to 14th February 2018 inclusive
 11.15am to 1.15pm
 
Variation, DNA and the Genome, Meiosis, Inheritance and determination of inherited traits

(Please note that GCSE qualifications are awarded by GCSE examining boards. They are not awarded by schools or other educational organisations who teach GCSE sessions. A GCSE can not be awarded by Discovery STEM Education for attending GCSE group tuition sessions.)
